Their success comes from consistently putting out reliable, powerful, and durable products at an excellent price. The DCD777C2 is a compact and lightweight drill driver that is both powerful and reliable. This is the best 20v cordless drill. The high performance motor delivers 300 unit watts out (UWO) or roughly 500 in-lbs of torque which places it in the most powerful cordless drill category.

The high-speed gear box transmission delivers 2 speeds of up to 1500 rpm, which allows it to be versatile to many drilling and driving tasks. The drills ergonomic handle and lightweight design makes it perfect for many drilling and screw driving tasks.

With it having such reliability, The Dewalt DCD777C2 also comes with a number of features which help the drilling process. Its lightweight and compact design helps to fit into tight areas. It also comes with a wide range of drill accessories including two 1.5aH batteries, one fast charger and a nifty DeWalt tool bag. This is hands down the best cordless drill for the money, and an essential tool for any drilling task.

The overall build quality on this DeWALT cordless drill driver is great. The ergonomic and lightweight design makes this drill easy to hold and use. Furthermore, the compact and light design is great for getting into those tight spaces.  The DCD777C2 is a cordless drill with a brushless motor that delivers excellent performance for its price. This thing is awesome! It screws into wood effortlessly and feels great in your hand. Furthermore, it's nice and lightweight compared to other cordless drills such as the Black & Decker LDX (which we reviewed below). The ergonomic and lightweight design makes this drill easy to hold and use. Furthermore, the compact and light design is great for getting into those tight spaces. The overall build quality on this DeWALT cordless drill driver is great. We found this DeWalt drill, like many other dewalt cordless tools really lives up to its brands' reputation. It also comes with a three-year Dewalt warranty for peace of mind. This is the best cordless drill for the money and also one of the highest rated cordless drills on Amazon. We highly recommend this drill for anyone looking for a durable, lightweight, powerful and versatile drill. Overall, its a really well balanced tool with all the features you would ever need out of a cordless drill.

We found the chuck to hold bits securely compared to previous models of DeWalt drills. The ratcheting keyless chuck holds bits securely, and the bits stay tight. The only thing we dislike about the chuck is the plastic design. It’s still high quality nonetheless, and switching bits is fast and easy.

This cordless drill features a bright LED light which makes it easy to see when you’re working in hard to see places. The thing we loved the most about this DEWALT drill is the 20 second LED timer which keeps the LED-light active for 20 seconds after releasing the trigger. It’s really useful when you’re working in dark places.

In terms of battery life, you’d be hard pressed to find a battery that performs this well. It is actually an 18-volt DeWalt battery, branded as 20-volt. This is because there is a difference when the battery is plugged in, the battery will measure 20-volts but during usage it will only register as 18-volts. Nonetheless, the included DeWalt battery can easily last you the whole day, and if it doesn’t it comes with a second battery! In terms of power, we found this DeWalt drill to be almost too powerful on it's highest setting, luckily this drill has 15 adjustable torque settings and a variable speed control so you don't need to worry about stripping any screws. The second battery is great, just throw it on the fast charger and it’ll be ready for you when you run out of juice. To charge the 20-volt battery to full it took anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour. Very reasonable in our opinion.

The lithium-ion 1/2 inch compact drill driver kit includes a DeWALT carry bag, one fast charger, and two 20V DeWALT batteries.

3. Black & Decker LDX120C

Best Cordless Drill For Homeowner

Best Budget Cordless Drill: LDX120C from Black and Decker

The Black and Decker LDX120C is the best cordless drill for homeowners on the market today. It’s a budget cordless drill that is best suited for light duty wood drilling and screw driving tasks. We do not recommend using this drill for any sort of metal, steel, concrete, or masonry drilling. It is just not powerful enough for that sort of work.

It comes with an 11 position clutch that prevents you from stripping screws. We found it comfortable to hold and it has a nice wide grip perfect for bigger hands. Due to it’s bulky size and heavy weight, we don’t recommend it for drilling in tight or hard to access spaces.

The LDX120C cordless lithium-ion drill is perfect for small tasks. The price point of this 20v black and decker cordless drill-driver makes it our top pick for the best budget cordless drill. Just don’t expect to be able to drill through harder materials with this drill driver isn’t cut out for that kind of heavy-duty work.

This drill has a low torque value of 115 in-lbs. This good for the average homeowner or weekend DIYer and the affordable price tag makes it the best cheap cordless drill. It’s more of a DIY drill made for the simple homeowner. Professional contractors and handymen need a better drill.

No, this drill is simply just not powerful enough for that kind of work. If you need to drill concrete or brick then you should use a hammer drill instead. In our opinion, this drill is best for home use.

We do not recommend it for this. The bulky design and heavyweight makes it difficult for drilling in tight and hard to reach spaces.

4. Bosch PS31-2A 12V Max 3/8-inch Drill Driver

Best Small Cordless Drill

bosch ps31 12v cordless drill

The Bosch PS31-2A is a great 12V cordless drill driver that delivers excellent performance-to-size ratio. It is one of the top 12 volt cordless drills currently available. This is the best small cordless drill. The main benefit is it’s extremely light design, coming in at only 2lbs, which makes it a great tool for those who do a lot of over the head drilling.

The Bosch PS31-2A comes with 265 in-lbs of torque, and it has a two speed motor which can run up to 1300 rpm. The medium amount of torque and two speed settings make it versatile for any wood and drywall drilling tasks. The LED light provides increased visibility that is perfect for working in idark corners and low-light areas.

The drill has twenty clutch settings for precise torque adjustments. It can meet a large number of wood drilling and screw driving tasks. Unlike conventional plastic housing, which can break if dropped, the drill itself is build with an ABS/nylon composite that delivers increased durability. This is an all-around great drill driver, but it doesn’t quite match the power of the Dewalt DCD777C2 cordless drill. The main advantage is the extremely compact design and light weight design which allows it to excel in overhead drilling and drilling in tight spaces.

The two batteries are great because you can leave one on the charger and swap it out when it runs out. Though, I have to say, I don’t think you’ll have an issue with battery life unless you’re doing intense drilling. Battery should last at least an entire day of light usage and 4 hours of heavy use. The design and quality are very high, you can tell the difference between this and lower end drills immediately. It’s a lightweight tool too, making it easy to handle, and it fits well in your hand. The quick charger included with this drill charges the battery to full in only 30 minutes. Battery life is not an issue with this drill. For those who are not huge fans of bigger 18v and 20v cordless drills, then this is a suitable choice. It delivers enough power for any homeowner in a compact size and offers excellent battery life.

Yes, this is an excellent choice for tight spaces due to its extremely compact design and light weight.

You get two batteries, the drill, a Bosch tool bag and a fast charger if you purchase the drill kit. You also have the option to buy the bare tool.

It also features an LED light which is helpful for lining up holes in dark places.

5. Ridgid 18 Volt 1,500 RPM Lithium Ion Cordless Drill / Driver

Best Cordless Drill Under 50

Ridgid R860052 18V Cordless Drill Driver
The Ridgid is one of the cheapest cordless drills on the market, something you can’t overlook if you’re on a budget. It’s amazing how much power it has, and yet it is still under 50 which is a great deal. This drill is our choice for best cordless drill under 50. It’s a good basic drill for DIY and doesn’t come with any fancy options like LED lighting. This model has a user-friendly design and a powerful long-lasting 18V Li-Ion battery, which is perfect for working longer jobs.

You don’t have to worry as much about arm fatigue since this model weights only 3.25 lbs. It also comes with a comfortable micro texture grip for easy handling. It does deliver a lot of torque, however, the motor quality just isn’t built for drilling into steel. This is a very basic drill, it has no fancy features like LED lights, perfect for just simple drilling and driving tasks at an excellent price point.

Overall, this is a great cordless drill under 50 for DIY tasks. It doesn’t come with any fancy features like LED lighting, so if you’re looking for a basic drill at a lower price point then look no further than the Ridgid.

This drill will work with all of Ridgids 18 Volt batteries, including but not limited to the AC840087P2, AC840089, and the AC840086.

For the price it delivers a build quality that you wouldn't expect. Not the greatest, however, for at the price point this 18v cordless drill-driver offers remarkable performance. Furthermore, it has a user-friendly design, and it is powered by long-lasting 18V Li-Ion battery for working longer jobs and its lightweight. The drill weighs 3.25lbs, and has a comfortable micro texture grip for easy handling.

No, there is no LED work light on this drill. There is no light when you depress the trigger of the drill, so it is not a good choice for working in dark areas.

In theory, with it's 500 in-lbs of torque it should be able to. Should you? No. We didn't even attempt it, there is no way this drill is going to last for more than a day of that, even if you're using a carbide drill bit. That's not to say this isn't a good drill, but it just isn't meant for metal drilling.

7. Milwaukee M12 12V 3/8-Inch Drill Driver

Best Compact Drill

milwaukee compact drill driver
We really love the feel to this drill. Very easy to handle because it’s nice and light. Battery lasted us an entire day on the job. The battery life is quite amazing on Milwaukee brand drills in general. Furthermore than batteries charged fully in 30 minutes. The chuck holds the bits securely. The metal ratcheting chuck makes it easy to change drill bits. If you get the kit then you get an additional battery that you can throw on the charger and swap it out when the first one runs out, so you’ll never run out of battery with this one.

Milwaukee is a great brand, and they are known for their excellent high quality products. This product is no exception to that. For most, the 12V version provides enough power to complete pretty much any DIY tasks. The compact size is good for tight and hard to access spaces. It lets you go places you wouldn’t usually be able to go to with an ordinary 18V-20V drill. It’s an excellent design with an ergonomic grip to boot. The build quality is great and it’s a very practical drill overall. The LED light helps illuminate your workspace and is perfect for drilling in hard to see spots. The lightweight design also makes it very portable. It has the perfect amount of power and torque for pretty much any home DIY task. It uses a variable speed trigger which is adjustable up to 1500RPM.

After testing the Milwaukee M12 (and the Bosch PS31-2A), the compact cordless drill series is really starting to grow on me. This is a very practical cordless drill, of course it doesn’t match the power of an 18V or 20V cordless drill, it still does a fantastic job at wood and drywall drilling tasks. The power of this drill should be sufficient enough for any homeowner. This is the best compact drill on the market today.

Milwaukee is a well trusted brand, and they are known for their excellent high quality products. This product is no exception to that, this is th best 12 volt cordless drill, as it comes with enough power to complete pretty much any DIY task. It also has a very compact design that lets you go places you wouldn't usually be able to reach with an ordinary bulky 18V or 20V cordless drill.

The Milwaukee M12 is in many ways similar to the Bosch PS31-2A. One of the biggest selling points is its lightweight design which is good for overhead drilling. You won't get as much power out of it as say the DeWalt DCD777C2 which has 500 in lbs of torque. But at 275 in-lbs of torque it offers the best-in-class performance to weight ratio in the industry.

If you get buy the drill kit, you get an additional battery that will come in handy when your first one runs out. When you run out of battery, just swap it with the extra one, which will save you time.

8. Ryobi 18V Brushless 1/2 Inch Drill Driver P252 Bare Tool

Best Ryobi Cordless Drill

Ryobi One+ Cordless Drill Review

The Ryobi P252 is a decent 18-volt tool at a reasonable price. This is the best Ryobi cordless drill. It is a very popular cordless drill driver on the market today. It comes with a lot of features you would see on higher priced point drills. There is also the ability to buy the Ryobi tools kit and accessories. The tools set gets you two cordless tools (the drill and the impact driver), two batteries, and a charger.

The P252 weighs roughly 2.7 pounds and the 24 clutch settings make it perfect for a wide range of drilling applications. The torque clutch settings and 2-speed gearbox helps it meet a diverse set of drilling and driving tasks.

The Ryobi P252 has a number of features which makes drilling and driving tasks much easier. The drill has a magnetic tray, referred to as MAGTRAY, which allows for stroing bits and fasteners on the drill for easy access. It also has a well placed LED-light, that helps when drilling in dark places.

Ryobi One Plus Battery Issues

This is a decent drill, and Ryobi power tools have an okay brand reputation, but I’ll warn you that I’ve had bad experiences with Ryobi 18v batteries. Cordless drill reviews from users on Amazon reveal a similar complaint about the Ryobi 18v lithium battery. I’ve personally had to replace the battery on my Ryobi tools many times, however, they are cheap to replace in comparison to other drills.

One of the only major issues we had is with the battery (which we described in detail above). We liked the keyless chuck on this Ryobi One+ Drill. It allows users to simply place them directly into the chuck, so no chuck keys are required to replace the drill bits on this power tool. One thing we disliked about this rigid drill is its plastic 1/2-inch chuck. We wish Ryobi would have stepped up and placed a metal chuck instead.

You have the option to buy just the drill, or you can buy the complete Ryobi drill set. The Ryobi tools kit which includes two Ryobi cordless tools (drill/driver & impact driver), two 18 volt Ryobi batteries and a charger.

The magnetic tray (MAGTRAY) is the most useful feature of this 18V Lithium-Ion Drill/Driver, which allows you to store extra bits and fasteners on the tool for easy access.

This Ryobi light drill has a well-positioned LED-light to help when drilling in dark places. The One+ drill-driver features a cordless ergonomic pistol grip which makes for easy handling.

9. Makita XFD061 18V LXT Lithium-Ion COMPACT Brushless Cordless Drill

Best Makita Cordless Drill

Makita XFD Lithium-Ion Compact Brushless Makita Hammer Drill 1/2inch Best Power Drill Set

Makita is another trusted name in the power tools industry. Makita tools are made to last, and this 18V Makita drill is no exception to that rule. The brushless motor provides longer tool life and greater battery efficiency when compared to brushed motors.

Like all Makita tools we’ve tested, the drill is extremely durable. They spare no expense when creating the best drill. The all metal gears and gear housing provides maximum durability on the job site. Of course, there is always a disadvantage to using steel over plastic, and that is the weight of the tool. Coming in at just under 4lbs, this drill is the heaviest cordless drill driver we reviewed. The trade-off is the all metal gear housing and the extreme durability. The tool has been engineered for water and dust resistance, which is good if you work in harsh job sites. If you work in harsh and tough job sites then this is the best cordless drill for you.

This drill is equipped with Makita’s trademarked Start Protection Computer Controls system which allows for the tool and battery to communicate for better performance. The system allows the tool and the battery to exchange data with each other to prevent overloading over-discharging and overheating.

The Star Protection system featured on Makita cordless tools allows the tool and battery exchange data to prevent overloading, over-discharging, and overheating. As quoted by Makita:

Makita cordless tools are engineered for industrial applications, and for added protection during the most demanding jobs Makita created STAR Protection Computer Controls™. STAR is communications technology that monitors conditions during use, allowing the tool and battery to exchange data to protect against overloading, overdischarging and overheating. If STAR detects conditions that threaten to overload, overdischarge or overheat the tool or battery, the tool will automatically stop. At that time the user can either restart the tool, change or charge the battery, and put the tool back to work. When you slide a Makita 18V LXT® battery with the STAR symbol onto a Makita tool that has either the STAR symbol or a yellow terminal, you are benefitting from STAR Protection Computer Controls™ —

The Makita cordless drill set includes one Makita drill, one 18V LXT 3.0Ah Lithium-Ion battery, a Li-Ion electric drill battery charger, and a cool-looking Makita tool bag. Makita also offers an upgraded version of this drill set with the cordless hammer drill included.

The Makita tools brand is known for their high quality cordless tools and handheld power drills, but be warned that this drill only comes with a one-year warranty.

Cordless Drill Buying Guide

Keep the following criteria in mind when choosing a cordless drill:

  • Weight
  • Voltage
  • Torque
  • Battery

We will go in-depth into each of the criteria below, and tell you the most important points to keep in mind when purchasing a new cordless drill.

Let’s start off with the weight of the tool. If you’re performing more difficult tasks, such as drilling overhead for long periods of time, then the weight of the tool becomes an important thing to consider. Keep in mind that the lighter the tool gets, the less power it will produce. Now there are obviously some exceptions, but if you must have a drill which is both light and powerful, you will likely have to pay top dollar for this type of drill.

stock image voltDo not confuse voltage and torque. Although the voltage is a general indicator of the amount of torque the drill has, don’t be fooled into believing that a 20v cordless drill is any better than a 18v cordless drill. Now if you’re doing simple DIY, a good voltage for these types of tasks is 12V, this will allow you to save money and get a lighter and cheaper cordless drill that will still be able to do all of the tasks you need. If you need more power; for example, if drilling into harder materials like metal, then you should choose a drill that is 18 volts to 20 volts. Generally drills in this range are the best for harder materials.

Torque is an indicator of the amount of force your drill has. Of course, that is a very simplified explanation of this, but we’ll save that for a different article. All you need to know is that a higher torque means more power. Keep in mind that a high amount of torque is not necessarily a good thing, because if you have too much torque you may strip your screws. For this reason, we recommend choosing a cordless drill which has multiple torque settings.

dewalt flexvolt batteryWhat you should know about the battery is that cordless drill batteries are rated in amp hours, most commonly abbreviated as aH. The higher the aH number, the longer the battery life. Typically cordless drills are between 1.5aH and 3aH. We recommend cordless drills around the 2aH range for a balance of battery life and overall drill weight.

Another thing you should know is the two types of cordless drill batteries: Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) and Nickel Cadmium (NiCd). Li-Ion is the better of the two because it retains its charge for longer than NiCd and it weighs less than Nickel Cadmium batteries.

Now you can always choose a drill with a higher aH rating, but know that there is a linear relationship between the amount of aH and the weight of the tool. Adding an additional amp hour could increase the weight of the tool by as much as 1lb. Instead of choosing a bigger battery, consider a cordless drill which includes two batteries. This will allow you to keep one on the charger, and work with the other and swap them out when necessary.

Cordless Drill FAQ

What kind of cordless drill battery is the best?

There are two types of batteries that come with cordless drills: Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd) and Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion). Lithium Ion batteries are superior to Ni-Cd batteries because they are lighter and smaller for the same voltage. Li-Ion batteries last longer, require less maintenance and can hold their charge for a longer time when compared to Ni-Cd batteries. There is nothing worse than having your battery run out while you’re working. Some of the drills we tested came with a spare battery, which is an important thing to consider if you’re working longer jobs. If you will only be using your drill for some time and then storing it for a few months, a Li-Ion battery would be ideal as it keeps the charge for longer.

Do I need a cordless drill, a hammer drill or an impact driver?

Consider what you need to drill through. If you’re only working with soft wood then a cordless drill would be an ideal choice. On the other hand, if you need to drill through harder surfaces, then you’re going to need an impact driver or even a hammer drill. For lighter tasks, screw driving only tasks, you can opt to use a cordless screwdriver instead.

Are cordless drills better than corded drills?

Since a cordless drill (obviously) has no cord it makes it easier to handle compared to corded drills. The lack of a cord makes them easier to handle and reduces tripping hazards in the workplace. Cordless drills are more compact, offer more mobility and are also less expensive! So why would people use corded drills? Corded drills have the advantage of not needing a battery, which means you can use them for longer. They are also more powerful than cordless drills. In general, the cordless drill power and intensity is dependent on the intensity and voltage of the battery.

What is the best cordless drill brand?

drill brands

There are many brands of cordless drills. But which is the best brand? The best brand of cordless drill is Bosch. DeWALT, Milwaukee, and Makita are also good cordless drill driver brands. All of these companies put out great products, offer great performance, value, and good warranties.

Is a brushless cordless drill better than a brushed cordless drill?

Brushless motor drills provide better performance than brushed drills. When compared to brushed drills, brushless drills have a significantly longer battery life. The difference is due to the brushless motors magnetic design. Drills with brushed motors are cheaper but their lifetime usage is shorter. The motor requires maintenance to clean or replace the brushes. Brushless drills, on the other hand, almost never need any maintenance and have a longer lifespan.

Wow, you’ve reached the end… I’m impressed. Hopefully you now have everything you need to find the best cordless drill. If not, don’t hesitate to leave us a comment below with your questions and we will do our best to help.
