Choosing a cordless drill can be a challenge; it must meet your work demands, budgets, and preferences. With that being said, here is a list of the best cordless drill, each suited to the type of work you’re doing.

#1 The Best Cordless Drill Driver: Bosch DDS183B

The Best Cordless Drill : Bosch DDS183B

This is truly the best cordless drill. It is much more compact and lightweight than anything we have tested in the price range. We love the feel of this drill and its ergonomic design, which makes it really easy to handle.

The whole thing weighs only 2.6 pounds, and the short head makes it easy to work in tight spaces. Don’t let its small size fool you, this Bosch drill is the most powerful drill in its class, delivering just over 500 in-lb of force. With it’s 20 torque settings you won’t ever have to worry about stripping screws, because you are able to adjust the amount of torque. Yet, if you need the extra power it is always available.

The Bosch DDS183B 18v Cordless Lithium-Ion EC Drill uses an efficient brushless motor which provides a longer battery life and a longer overall tool lifespan. This drill features KickBack Control which causes an immediate stop in case of blockage or a potentially dangerous torque reaction. This kind of attention to detail is what really sets the tool apart from the others we tested. You can just feel the quality difference between this drill and lower end drills.

The DDS183B Compact Tough 1/2-in drill is suitable for any handyman, amateur or semi-professional contractor.

In our opinion, this is the drill to get. The Bosch DDS183B is the top-rated drill in the market, and it is priced better than many of the other so-called “better models”

#2 Best Cordless Drill For The Money: DeWalt DCD777C2 Lithium-Ion Brushless Drill Driver

dewalt cordless drill best cordless drill for the money

The DCD777C2 is a cordless drill with a brushless motor that delivers excellent performance for its price. This thing is awesome! It screws into wood effortlessly and feels great in your hand. Furthermore, it’s nice and lightweight compared to other cordless drills such as the Black & Decker LDX (which we reviewed below).

We found the chuck to hold bits securely compared to previous models of DeWalt drills. The ratcheting keyless chuck holds bits securely, and the bits stay tight. The only thing we dislike about the chuck is the plastic design. It’s still high quality nonetheless, and switching bits is fast and easy. The overall build quality on this DeWALT cordless drill driver is great. The ergonomic and lightweight design makes this drill easy to hold and use. Furthermore, the compact and light design is great for getting into those tight spaces.

In terms of power, we found this DeWalt drill to be almost too powerful on it’s highest setting, luckily this drill has 15 adjustable torque settings and a variable speed control so you don’t need to worry about stripping any screws.

This cordless drill features a bright LED light which makes it easy to see when you’re working in hard to see places. The thing we loved the most about this DEWALT drill is the 20 second LED timer which keeps the LED-light active for 20 seconds after releasing the trigger. It’s really useful when you’re working in dark places.

In terms of battery life, you’d be hard pressed to find a battery that performs this well. It is actually an 18-volt DeWalt battery, branded as 20-volt. This is because there is a difference when the battery is plugged in, the battery will measure 20-volts but during usage it will only register as 18-volts.

Nonetheless, the included DeWalt battery can easily last you the whole day, and if it doesn’t it comes with a second battery! The second battery is great, just throw it on the fast charger and it’ll be ready for you when you run out of juice. To charge the 20-volt battery to full it took anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour. Very reasonable in our opinion.

We found this DeWalt drill, like many other dewalt cordless tools really lives up to its brands’ reputation. It also comes with a three-year Dewalt warranty for peace of mind. This is the best cordless drill for the money and also one of the highest rated cordless drills on Amazon. We highly recommend this drill for anyone looking for a durable, lightweight, powerful and versatile drill.

Overall, its a really well balanced tool with all the features you would ever need out of a cordless drill. In addition to all of this, the lithium-ion 1/2 inch compact drill driver kit also includes a DeWALT carry bag, one fast charger, and two 20V DeWALT batteries.

#3 Best Cordless Drill for Homeowner: Black & Decker LDX120C

Best Budget Cordless Drill: LDX120C from Black and Decker

The price point of this 20v black and decker cordless drill-driver makes it our top pick for the best budget cordless drill.

The LDX120C cordless lithium-ion drill is perfect for small tasks. And the affordable price tag makes it the best cheap cordless drill.

Just don’t expect to be able to drill through harder materials with this drill though, no sir, this drill driver isn’t cut out for that kind of works. It’s more of a DIY drill made for the simple homeowner. If you need to drill concrete or brick then you should use a hammer drill instead. In our opinion, this is the best drill for home use.

#4 Best Small Cordless Drill: Bosch PS31-2A Cordless Drill

bosch ps31 12v cordless drill

We really liked the compact and lightweight design on this drill. The drill kit came with two batteries, the drill, a Bosch bag, and a fast charger.

The two batteries are great because you can leave one on the charger and swap it out when it runs out. Though, I have to say, I don’t think you’ll have an issue with battery life unless you’re doing intense drilling. Battery should last at least an entire day of light usage and 4 hours of heavy use. The quick charger included with this drill charges the battery to full in only 30 minutes. Battery life is not an issue with this drill.

It also features an LED light which is helpful for lining up holes in dark places. The design and quality are very high, you can tell the difference between this and lower end drills immediately. It’s a lightweight tool too, making it easy to handle, and it fits well in your hand.

For those who are not huge fans of bigger 18v and 20v cordless drills, then this is a suitable choice. It delivers enough power for any homeowner in a compact size and offers excellent battery life.

#5 Best Cordless Drill Under 50: RIDGID R860052 Cordless Drill/Driver

Ridgid R860052 18V Cordless Drill Driver

This 18v cordless drill-driver offers remarkable performance for its price point.

It has a user-friendly design, and it is powered by long-lasting 18V Li-Ion battery for working longer jobs.

This is a lightweight drill (3.25lbs), and it has a comfortable micro texture grip for easy handling.

This drill is our choice for best cordless drill under 50. It’s a good basic drill for DIY and doesn’t come with any fancy options like LED lighting.

#6 Best 18v Cordless Drill: Milwaukee M18 18V Lithium-Ion 1/2 Inch Cordless Drill Driver

Milwaukee Best 18V Cordless Drill

This 18V drill is lightweight and powerful. It is one of the top-rated drills we tested in terms of battery life. This drill has very good battery life in comparison to other cordless drills.

It has an ergonomic grip, which makes it easy to use.

This Milwaukee 1/2″ keyless chuck drill is versatile, durable and long lasting. You can choose to buy the bare-tool, or you can buy the Milwaukee drills set. The Milwaukee tool set includes one 18v Milwaukee drill, one Milwaukee impact driver, two Milwaukee 18-volt batteries, a charger, belt clip, and soft carrying case.

Not only that but because of the unique REDLITHIUM battery, this drill, on its highest power setting, lasted twice as long as all the other drills we tested. We found these batteries to last the longest out of all the drills.

REDLITHIUM™ batteries last longer, think faster and work harder than all other professional lithium-ion batteries. Our exclusive integration of chemistry, pack design and circuitry come together for superior output in the harshest environments. REDLITHIUM™ batteries deliver more work over the course of your day and over life of the battery — https://www.milwaukeetool.com/Innovations/RedLithium

Milwaukee cordless tools are considered a good brand and have solid ratings on all of their products. This drill is one of the best drills we reviewed in terms of battery life.

In our opinion, this Milwaukee drill is the best 18v cordless drill in the market today.

#7 Best Compact Drill: Milwaukee 2407-20 M12 12V 3/8-Inch Drill Driver Review

milwaukee compact drill driver

We really love the feel to this drill. Very easy to handle because it’s nice and light.  Battery lasted us an entire day on the job. The battery life is quite amazing on Milwaukee brand drills in general. Furthermore than batteries charged fully in 30 minutes. The chuck holds the bits securely. The metal ratcheting chuck makes it easy to change drill bits. If you get the kit then you get an additional battery that you can throw on the charger and swap it out when the first one runs out, so you’ll never run out of battery with this one.

Milwaukee is a great brand, and they are known for their excellent high quality products. This product is no exception to that. For most, the 12V version provides enough power to complete pretty much any DIY tasks. The compact size is good for tight and hard to access spaces. It lets you go places you  wouldn’t usually be able to go to with an ordinary 18V-20V drill. It’s an excellent design with an ergonomic grip to boot. The build quality is great and it’s a very practical drill overall.

The LED light helps illuminate your workspace and is perfect for drilling in hard to see spots. The lightweight design also makes it very portable. It has the perfect amount of power and torque for pretty much any home DIY task. It uses a variable speed trigger which is adjustable up to 1500RPM.

#8 Ryobi P252 18V Lithium Ion Battery Powered Brushless Drill

Ryobi One+ Cordless Drill Review

This is a decent 18-volt tool by Ryobi. It is small, weighing only 2.7 pounds, but it is very powerful. You have the option to buy just the drill, or you can buy the complete Ryobi drill set. The Ryobi tools kit which includes two Ryobi cordless tools (drill/driver & impact driver), two 18 volt Ryobi batteries and a charger.

No chuck keys are required to replace the drill bits on this power tool. The keyless chuck on this Ryobi One+ Drill allows users to simply place them directly into the chuck.

One thing we disliked about this rigid drill is its plastic 1/2-inch chuck. We wish Ryobi would have stepped up and placed a metal chuck instead.

This Ryobi light drill has a well-positioned LED-light to help when drilling in dark places. The One+ drill-driver features a cordless ergonomic pistol grip which makes for easy handling.

The magnetic tray (MAGTRAY) is the most useful feature of this 18V Lithium-Ion Drill/Driver, which allows you to store extra bits and fasteners on the tool for easy access.

Ryobi One Plus Battery Issues

This is a decent drill, and Ryobi power tools have an okay brand reputation, but I’ll warn you that I’ve had bad experiences with Ryobi 18v batteries. Cordless drill reviews from users on Amazon reveal a similar complaint about the Ryobi 18v lithium battery. I’ve personally had to replace the battery on my Ryobi tools many times, however, they are cheap to replace in comparison to other drills.

#9 Makita XFD061 18V LXT Lithium-Ion COMPACT Brushless Cordless Drill

Makita XFD Lithium-Ion Compact Brushless Makita Hammer Drill 1/2inch Best Power Drill Set

The ergonomic grip on this 18V Makita drill makes it easy to hold and control. The Makita cordless drill set includes one Makita drill, one 18V LXT 3.0Ah Lithium-Ion battery, a Li-Ion electric drill battery charger, and a cool-looking Makita tool bag.

Makita also offers an upgraded version of this drill set with the cordless hammer drill included.

The drill is slightly heavier than other drills we reviewed above. It weighs 3.8lbs with the battery attached.

The drill is equipped with Makita power tools trademarked Star Protection Computer Controls system. The Star Protection system featured on Makita cordless tools allows the tool and battery exchange data to prevent overloading, over-discharging, and overheating.

Makita cordless tools are engineered for industrial applications, and for added protection during the most demanding jobs Makita created STAR Protection Computer Controls™. STAR is communications technology that monitors conditions during use, allowing the tool and battery to exchange data to protect against overloading, overdischarging and overheating. If STAR detects conditions that threaten to overload, overdischarge or overheat the tool or battery, the tool will automatically stop. At that time the user can either restart the tool, change or charge the battery, and put the tool back to work. When you slide a Makita 18V LXT® battery with the STAR symbol onto a Makita tool that has either the STAR symbol or a yellow terminal, you are benefitting from STAR Protection Computer Controls™ — https://www.makitatools.com/innovation

The Makita tools brand is known for their high quality cordless tools and handheld power drills, but be warned that this drill only comes with a one-year warranty.

How To Pick A Cordless Drill

stock image

In order to choose a cordless drill you must consider the following:

Reliable Brand

There are many brands of cordless drills. But which is the best brand? The best brand of cordless drill is Bosch. DeWALT, Milwaukee, and Makita are also good cordless drill driver brands. All these companies put out great products, offer great performance, value, and good warranties.

Good Battery Life

There is nothing worse than having your battery run out while you’re working. Some of the drills we tested came with a spare battery, which is an important thing to consider if you’re working longer jobs.

There are two types of batteries that come with cordless drills: Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd) and Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion). Lithium Ion batteries are superior to Ni-Cd batteries because they are lighter and smaller for the same voltage. Li-Ion batteries last longer, require less maintenance and can hold their charge for a longer time when compared to Ni-Cd batteries. If you will only be using your drill for some time and then storing it for a few months, a Li-Ion battery would be ideal as it keeps the charge for longer.

Power

Consider what you need to drill through. If you’re only working with soft wood then a cordless drill would be an ideal choice. On the other hand, if you need to drill through harder surfaces, then you’re going to need an impact driver or even a hammer drill. For lighter tasks you can opt to use a cordless screwdriver instead.

Corded vs Cordless

Since a cordless drill (obviously) has no cord it makes it easier to handle compared to corded drills. The lack of a cord makes them easier to handle and reduces tripping hazards in the workplace.

Cordless drills are more compact, offer more mobility and are also less expensive! So why would people use corded drills? Corded drills have the advantage of not needing a battery, which means you can use them for longer. They are also more powerful than cordless drills. In general, the cordless drill power and intensity is dependent on the intensity and voltage of the battery.

Is a Brushless Cordless Drill Better Than Brushed?

Brushless motor drills provide better performance than brushed drills. When compared to brushed drills, brushless drills have a significantly longer battery life. The difference is due to the brushless motors magnetic design.

Drills with brushed motors are cheaper but their lifetime usage is shorter. The motor requires maintenance to clean or replace the brushes. Brushless drills, on the other hand, almost never need any maintenance and have a longer lifespan.

CONCLUSION

Wow, you’ve reached the end… I’m impressed. Hopefully you now have everything you need to find the best cordless drill. If not, don’t hesitate to leave us a comment below with your questions and we will do our best to help.
